Yes, you can use the DVD Writer as these have generic drivers, but it appears the firmware is not good for your writer. It's possible that the firmware is for another revision, therefore making it impossible to use it with your current one.
Unfortunately, it's impossible to download another firmware version, because the website developed to hold the firmware is not available anymore because the domain expired.
