Is AVI playback possible?

Is it possible to play AVI directly with QuickTime, or do I need to convert the files to a QuickTime supported format?

No, it's noе possible to play AVI files directly. You will either have to install some codecs like Combined Community Codec Pack or convert the file to a supported format (preferably .mp4). You can use the database of Software Informer to look for a video converter.
