If the unit appears to be failing, I recommend you check the manual of the device. Use all the information to perform a factory reset. After this procedure, go to Start > Run > devmgmt.msc and make sure that all the drivers are installed when it's connected to PC. If you see something in yellow, insert the support CD and re-install the necessary software/drivers. Reboot the PC and the device and it should work again. Most likely, there was a file corruption that caused this.
