Does it send information back to Google?

I love the app but am curious if it returns translations back to Google?

No, the application won't send usage data or statistics to the Google servers, but it will query them in order to find the best matching quality for the translation procedure. The application requires Internet to get the data from Google's server and that's it. No vital information is sent back to Google.
