You have probably encountered a maintenance session or the servers had issues, and because of that the above message was displayed. I have Software Informer client installed on my computer and it works normally. I was able to perform a refresh to download the newest updates for the applications installed on my computer.
Additionally, go to Start > Control Panel > System and Security > Windows Firewall and add the application to communicate with Internet. It should work this way either.
