PuTTy serves as a client to anything that it's remotely connectable. In your case when you initiate a connection on serial port (COM) you expect that the other device to run in the same way to establish a proper connection. You should avoid puTTy and use a tool which has been specifically made for the device you have. It's more easy and convenient.
