How can I record silently?

I am recording a play, streaming from BBC Radio 3. I want to turn down the volume on my PC, but when I do, the recording volume is also reduced. How can I maintain the recording volume but reduce the streaming volume?

The recording applications uses the default sound device to record the sounds. This means that all other applications will deliver sound through the same device. In this case, you can record while nothing is playing in the background or simply schedule the recording when the computer is idle. You cannot separate the sounds. If you have Windows 7, right click the speak on the system tray then select Sound Mixer, and drag the slider down for all the applications except the stream.
