I disabled Synaptic Pointing Device a year ago and now I find that the touch pad is active again. I cannot get into the device to disable the function, the message I get is "unable to connect to Synaptic Device Driver". All the options are grey when I try to open the options. How can I disable the touch pad now? My laptop is Dell.

To disable your touch pad from the laptop, you need to press a certain combination of keys from the keyboard. This is different for every computer model, but usually is the Fn key with another one like F6 (there is a touch pad icon on the key that you need to press together with the Fn one). This should fix your problem. If not, try to uninstall and then install the software again and stop the touch pad from there.
