When I convert a video that is HD into 640x480 format, it puts a black border around the video instead of just keeping the original similar shape of the video. Why is it so?

The application puts black borders because the resolution of your screen is bigger than the resolution of the video and the video player is set to display the video at its native resolution. Try configuring the play to display the videos in Stretched mode. The video (although will be kept at its native resolution) will be enlarged to fill your screen.
