I have way too many backups and redundant files. Could I dump everything on the hard drive and let the software sort it out?

If you have the files stored on a device, then yes, you can dump them on the PC and then use a backup application or a file sorting utility to organize the files. After the files have been sorted, you will have the possibility to create a backup, but this time make sure to access the filters menu. The filters menu allows you to exclude directories, custom file types from the backup package. It's a great way to backup only the important data.
