Why does MS Word stop working?

Why does MS Word stop working? I've used this program for a long time and now, all of a sudden, many more than several times per day I get a window that says 'Word has stopped working', then a window that says 'Windows is looking for a solution'. Can someone help me?

This problem could be caused by many things.
