You are probably referring to Windows Messenger (not part of the Live Essentials) that automatically installs itself with the more current MS operating systems. To get rid of it, you can enable/disable features in your operating system. How you do it depends on what operating system you are using. Or you can just install the current version of MS Live Essentials which will install the latest version while removing the old one.
