Is this freeware? I was sure it was freeware when I first downloaded it but now the word "trial" looms under it. Also is there a way to tell the difference between an update and a paid upgrade? Thanks.

Yes this is freeware updated through download.com which is a part of Cnet network. It scans your computer for software you have an informs you of needed updates. Now if some of the software you're using isn't freeware you may have to pay if you want the update.
