If you turn on the webcam and then try to access an IM application, the webcam will give you an error because you can have only one active stream per application. This means you will need to turn off the cam and then open it on the IM application. For example, on Yahoo Messenger, access the Settings > Webcam and make sure it's properly selected in the Camera Source.
