I've encountered the same issues as you and it was caused by a bug in the application. You can easily fix it by making Chrome as new. To do this, go to Settings > Applications > All > Google Chrome or Chrome. Tap on Clear Data and Clear Cache. Reboot the phone and then try again. If you still experience issues, reinstall Chrome or update it from the Play Store.
To check for app updates, open Play Store and tap on the hamburger menu (those three lines on the left) > My Apps and Games.
