Looking for a DVD to AVI converter

I need to convert FOB files to AVI files with not too much compression. Microsoft Movie Maker compresses them too much and the sound went out of sync. A 600 MB compression would be great but I can't seem to find one. I want to put my movies on a hard drive but not when each movies is about 1.8 GB or larger. Any help, please?

Since AutoGK is discontinued and not available from the main developer anymore, I recommend DVDShrink. The application is free and you will have all the necessary tutorials and guides on how to shrink down a DVD to an acceptable 600 MB size.
