GPX track causes error

asked by about QuickRoute

Hello. I started using the program after several people told me thats what they use, and it seemed very successful. I tried it using the data from a recent event, but got a popup error window mentioning something about the gpx track having an issue. After trying the program again on an event 2 months ago with its date...there was another error related to the track. I then tried making maps from 3 previous events, and they worked. I also tried cross-loading the various maps and tracks, and the only time they failed was when I selected the last two bad gpx tracks. All maps and the previous 6 tracks even if they werent from those maps allowed me to initialise a new project. Someone told me that its possible to manually draw in my route onto a map, but the program wont load without a gpx track selected. Thanks for your help.

It seems that the issue is with the specific GPX tracks that you are trying to load into the QuickRoute program. It is possible that those tracks are corrupted or not compatible with the program. You could try finding alternative GPX tracks or manually drawing your route on the map as suggested. Make sure to double-check the format and compatibility of the GPX tracks you are using.

I got an email with your reply, thanks a lot, but I do not see your answer listed here. I did find out the issue with the GPX...someone opened the metadata file and found some errant <trk> entries at the end of the file, once I edited these out, the file loaded into quickroute. This happened about 3 or 4 times, but it did NOT happen to the track from this weekend.

Thanks...let see...Going in reverse...there are no tutorials for drawing ones route...you can’t load the process without a png and gpx. Next...my bad in that I failed to mention the god track from my device works in other device based apps, and on the livelox website...And back to the last statement...what does double checking the format mean? The last 8 routes I’ve run were done w my Apple Watch. The 6 previous to the two failed attempts worked fine.

If you're experiencing an error with a GPX track, here are some common issues and troubleshooting steps:

Common Issues with GPX Tracks

  1. File Corruption: The GPX file might be corrupted or incomplete.
  2. Invalid Format: The file might not be correctly formatted according to GPX specifications.
  3. Software Incompatibility: The software or device you're using might not fully support the GPX format or version.
  4. Missing Tags or Data: The GPX file might be missing essential tags or data points.
  5. Encoding Problems: The file might have encoding issues, such as being saved in a format that isn’t UTF-8.

Troubleshooting Steps

  1. Validate the GPX File:

    • Use an online GPX validator like GPX Validator to check for errors in the file.
  2. Check for Format Compliance:

    • Ensure the file adheres to the GPX XML schema. GPX files should be XML files with the .gpx extension.
  3. Verify with Another Software:

    • Try opening the GPX file with different software or apps to see if the issue persists. Some popular GPX viewers include GPS Visualizer and Garmin BaseCamp.
  4. Inspect the File Manually:

    • Open the GPX file in a text editor and check for missing or malformed XML tags. Look for errors such as mismatched tags or incomplete data.
  5. Convert the GPX File:

    • Try converting the GPX file to another format (e.g., KML) using tools like GPS Babel and see if the issue persists.
  6. Update Software:

    • Ensure that the software or device you are using is up-to-date. Software updates often include bug fixes and improved compatibility.
  7. Re-create the GPX File:

    • If possible, re-create the GPX file from the source or GPS device. This can help ensure that the file is correctly formatted.
  8. Check for Encoding Issues:

    • Make sure the file is saved in UTF-8 encoding. Some text editors allow you to change the encoding when saving the file.

If these steps do not resolve the issue, please provide more details about the specific error message or the context in which the error occurs, so I can assist you further.
