This is not a general rule but updating through browsers sometimes requires you to use a compatible browser version which in this case would be Internet Explorer because of its widely spread ActiveX support regarding applications and scripts. Try to switch browser and see if you encounter the error again. If this happens again, then there is something wrong with the webpage, the update process or with the device itself.
