Why am I asked to update Java every day?

I am asked on a daily basis to update Java. How to stop this?

Updates are necessary for the good functionality of Java-based programs or any other components which use this technology. You can turn off updates by going to the Control panel and double click the Java icon. Navigate to Update tab and uncheck the option: Check for Updates Automatically and you will be asked to check for monthly updates or disable at all. Click on Never check and the updates should disappear. I have attached an image to see exactly what I am talking about.

This was very helpful, thank you! I just wanted to say, I could not get an update tab until I right clicked on the hidden icon in my task bar and selected properties. The tab did not appear when going through the Control Panel. I'm just adding this in case anyone else has the same problem.

My understanding of the answer to your question is that Java is a security sieve - yes, that's a kind of "functionality" - and needs to be patched on a virtually daily basis.
