I have an excel workbook (two sheets) that contains hyperlinks - to the second worksheet. I now want to convert this file to PDF but the links won't work. Will I need to purchase an Adobe Writer software package - and if so, which one? And are you sure it will work?

I have checked the available source and the only way to preserve hyperlinks is through Save. Use Save to PDF instead of Print to PDF and the links and hyperlinks will be preserved within document. I didn't see anything related to a specific version of Adobe Writer or Reader.

You can read the available support page to learn how to Save as PDF: https://support.office.com/en-au/article/Save-as-PDF-d85416c5-7d77-4fd6-a216-6f4bf7c7c110
