You encountered this issue because it's most likely that the software (eg. Pastel), is not compatible with Windows 10. At this point you can revert back to the old Windows version using Start > Settings > Update and Recovery > Recovery > Return to old version or apply a compatibility tweak using right click on executable file and choose Properties > Compatibility. Select a version of Windows that you know the application works and launch it. You can keep it this way in case it works or go back to previous version of Windows.
