You can't convert Word documents to AI because they're two different file formats from different categories. The document is opened in a text processor while the AI file is opened in a graphical editor (Adobe Illustrator). If you want to insert text from the document, simply copy the text from the Word file then select the Text tool in Illustrator and paste it and that's it.
