Which is better: sleep or dim?

PowerNap provides a way to put my U2412M monitor into either a "sleep" state or into a dim display state. Is either of these state better for the monitor? I assume that the sleep state uses a little less power. If there are good arguments that the sleep state is better for the monitor I will leave it installed. If not, the normal PC operation will put the monitor in the dimmed state and I will uninstall PowerNap.

The best state for the monitor is sleep. There is no need for dim as it consumes energy and reduces the life of the monitor while in idle. However, it's recommended sleep because the monitor will turn on as fast as if it will be on dim. You should also configure the computer to enter a sleep state to conserve energy instead of keeping it running when it's in IDLE mode.
