This issue was found in the Command and Conquer games as well. Some say it's an anti-piracy protection implemented by EA, but it seems you will have to re-install the game. Make sure that you leave the folder as it is. Do not assign custom names. When you start the game, apply all the available updates and everything should be fixed.
