How to unlock Samsung GT I9300 protected with a password?

I forgot my Samsung password and now when I switch on my phone it's asking me to log in with my Gmail account and I have tried to no avail. Please help!

To be able to use the Gmail account, press the Power button for a few seconds until the menu appears. Select Data connection mode then fill the details for your Gmail account. You will then receive an email with a PIN that you can use to log-in and gain access to your phone.
