Why do some files cannot be opened and give a not supported error message? What does this mean?

It means that you do not have required soft wares to operate files of those format.

When a file is not supported windows automatically throws up two options as shown below:

If you don't exactly know which software to use use the net to search.

It will take you to the Microsoft's website where you will be provided with a list of applications which can run those files.

It all depends on the type of the program you're trying to open it with. If you encounter a message that says Windows can't open this file, you should right click the file and check its extension then paste the extension name in Google. It will display immediately, what application is needed to open the requested extension. You can then use Software Informer to look for the application to download it on your computer.
