A honeypot is a virtual machine which has been created with the purpose of studying viruses and hackers behavior. It is intentionally left unsecured (no updates, open ports, etc) so that security experts can analyze the "harm" that the threats is doing on a system (Windows, Mac, Linux). Based on the results, antivirus companies or security experts issue tools to fight back against these threats. It's like a digital trap for bad guys.
