VirtualBox is a virtualization application which allows you to install multiple operating systems that can run inside your OS. The program does not make modifications to your system's integrity and functionality unless you choose the proper installation method (an actual partition drive instead of virtual hard disk). You can use the application however you want as long as you don't touch the partitions because things may get complicated if you do so.
