PhotoImpression is designed to operate in Windows 2000, XP Service Pack 2 and Vista. The only products compatible with Windows 8 are listed on their dedicated page. I believe you will need to switch to an advanced product if you want Windows 8 compatibility.

I got the damn thing, Photoimpression 4, to work in windows 8 by using it off the disk and creating a short cut to the desk top. It will load into the program files but no boot up because of the compatibility problems. I emailed Arcsoft an told them I would be willing to pay the price of the 6.5 version. They said NO. All they have to do is come up with 64 bit setup but they much rather compete with the "big boys", Photoshop, etc. etc. How short sighted.

I'm a big fan of Photoimpression 4 and have used it for years. I love its simplicity which may fool some into thinking that it's not very good, but I can only say I've come up with some excellent results over the years (quickly and easily) that others have assumed were produced using one of the larger more professional editing suites. In my opinion it hasn't been bettered by Arcsoft's later "improved" versions of which I've tried out and given up on very quickly. Having migrated from XP to Vista, then windows 8 (32 bit)without any trouble, my new Windows 64 bit 8.1 just didn't want to know and wouldn't even start loading the disk. If it's any help to anyone, I loaded the disk into an older computer and started the setup then exported the installation files in a zipped folder to a memory stick then somehow managed to install it on my brand new computer and having followed Windows helpful (right click of the mouse) options to run the program... it works !!! albeit with a smallish window in the centre of a 21 inch screen.
