This issue happens with new operating systems like Windows 7/8. To remove the black sidebars, please go to the Control Panel of your videocard (nVidia Control Panel, ATI Catalyst Control Center, Intel Desktop Manager) and create a custom resolution that is the same as the game is running. Restart the game and the black sidebars will be gone.
