If you don't want to mess with too much HTML code I suggest you use an online service which provides simple code to implement your chatroom in a few simple steps. Recently I've used RumbleTalk and it was very good and effective. Simple visit the website, register for an username and then you can customize the chat based on your preferences. The website also provides the tutorial how to implement it on a custom website.

We also use RumbleTalk and it is very easy to implement.
We like the face that it is html5 so we can talk from mobile devices as well
