There is a small window that pops up on my desktop - it says, "update Qinstaller." What is it and how do I get rid of it?

Could you run 'msconfig' (Start -> Run -> Msconfig) and tell us what it lists under the Startup tab?

Qinstaller might be a wireless printing driver. Try to uninstal the software from Control Panel, after checking the software list for Upstate-ST-BW-Wireless Printer. You can also disable the process from System Configuration Utility. Go to Start, Run, type msconfig, go to Services and disable the application you're interested in. Check the Startup list also, in order to remove it from that category too.
