In most of the cases, the problem with the dark picture is caused by wrong settings used by the server (DVR) or the client. Firstly, access the server manually and re-configure it then access the client and use another encoder if it's possible. This might fix the problem with the dark picture. Additionally, it's possible that the cameras are turned off and because of that you get nothing but a black screen.
