Where is the data saved? How do you specify a directory where you want the data to be saved? How do you know what source is being recorded? Is it connected to the device that it came with (Alesis TapeLine USB)?

No, it isn't connected to the Alesis TapeLine USB device. Once you open the application, you will need to connect by yourself the device to your computer using the USB cable and to press Next:

Select your device and choose a tape format (Normal or Chrome). When you're ready to record, press the red Record button and then the Start/Stop one from your Alesis device:

After the recording process is complete, click Next, select a destination directory using the Folder icon next to Save Location, fill up the provided fields, click Next and follow the on-screen steps. Also, you need to know that the default location is in (C:) > Users > Your computer name > Music folder.
