Firefox behaves this way because of the insufficient RAM in your computer or because of the scripts running on certain pages. In 90 % of the cases, Firefox stops responding where there are are errors with Java and Javascript scripts running on that page. When you browse and encounter those issues, simply Stop the script when Firefox prompts you to do so.

Additionally, press Alt then go to Help > About Firefox and check for any available updates. If there is a new version, proceed with its installation, then revisit the website with problems and Firefox should load normally now.

Robert's Answer is a bit technical one(Difficult to understand for Non-tech users), I have used Firefox for a long time(regularly as a default browser) What I think you could easily understand is: Mostly, problem is your outdated Flash Player, outdated Firefox(obviously), and outdated Extensions of third party software whether wanted(IDM etc) or unwanted(Adware). Keep in mind these issues may be combined for your headache or a single one is also enough. Also if you are a Windows user then using Windows(client) for a long time also result in "Not Responding" of Firefox obviously issues arise due to reasons explained by Robert.
