How to individually restrict background data on my Lenovo A316i running on Android 4.2.2?

I just bought a Lenovo A316i and have installed WhatsApp. I cannot find the settings to individually restrict data on other applications running on Background data. Using the "Restrict Background data" function when I go to Settings > Data Usage, restricts background data on all applications, meaning that I cannot get instant notifications for new WhatsApp messages. My device runs on Android 4.2.2. Any Help?

The Data Usage screen should allow you to restrict data for apps. Simply access Data Usage then scroll down and tap on the apps that have been marked to consume the data. Tap on the application then press the Restrict Background data. You can either restrict the usage from the main screen for all apps or use the individually setting for each application.
