An application is required in order to transfer photos from the iPhone 5 mobile phone to your PC. In this case, iTunes is the official way to transfer photos from your iPhone to PC. Download iTunes from its official website and install it then connect your phone.

The most easiest way is to follow the Apple page for this operation. It's explained exactly for every OS.

Note: Although iTunes is not mentioned on the page, it is, however, required to install the necessary drivers for the phone.

You can't use iTunes to transfer photos from iPhone to computer. You can just move iPhone photos to computer:
1. Connect your iPhone to your PC with the USB cable. 2. Then AutoPlay windows appears, click the “Import pictures and videos”.
3. Choose the location that you want to import the photos to. By default, they will be copied to the My Pictures folder.
4. Tag your photos.
5. Once you’ve chosen tags, click the Import button.

Photo Stream is available to transfer iPhone 5 photos to computer. Enable Photo Stream on your phone. Go to Settings → Photos & Camera. Toggle "My Photo Stream" on. Go to Systems Preferences and click on iCloud. Make sure Photo Stream is checked. Go to iPhoto preferences and click Photo Stream. Make sure My Photo Stream is checked. If you want to automatically transport all photos you take to iPhoto, make sure Automatic Import and Automatic Upload are both checked. That way, when you open iPhoto, as long as your phone is connected to wifi, your photos will automatically upload to your computer.

You could use a freeware named Syncios manager, it can help you transfer your iPhone data to your computer. Otherwise, you can backup and restore your iPhone with this program.
